Thursday, July 18th, 2013

Interior lighting, for a lot of people, means going to the department store, and buying the first lamp that they like. To make a room look differently, you might be surprised to learn how much difference it can make to arrange the lighting in a new way. Your home might need a new lighting arrangement, and this article will give you some helpful ideas of several options you have.

Have you heard of track lighting? This is a top choice with many people doing interior design. Basically, several light fixtures are attached to a single track to create an effect. This is usually the best bet for those that do not have a lighting source nearby, or that do not have natural lighting that is available. You can attach this to rafters or beams in your ceiling if you want. They are often used to brighten up long hallways or on staircases. There are several alternatives when it comes to interior lighting and saving money. You might try LED lamps which last quite a long time. Using these lights can be very beneficial as they last 100,000 hours or 10 years. With only 5000 hours of use, and they’re gone, regular bulbs are pathetic in regard to LED’s. If changing a lightbulb is inconvenient, LED lights can come in quite handy. However, they are economical for just about any type of interior lighting.

An example of this would be seen lighting fixtures that look great in one house, but not in another. For example, if you have a room that’s decorated with Victorian furniture, a very modern looking lamp will clash with its surroundings. So if you’re considering some type of lighting, you can’t just go by how it looks in a department store or on a website. Think about how it will look in your home mentally. Make sure that your home does not conflict at all with your Interior lighting – that is not what it is supposed to achieve. People today, in our troubled economy, are always looking for ways to save money. Your energy bill probably comes to mind. Using more energy efficient types of lighting are things that are in demand. There are some alternatives you may want to consider for your interior lighting needs. LED lamps, for example, have an extremely long life. Many of them are designed to last for more than ten years, or for 100,000 hours. If you use an average bulb, you only get 5000 hours of use. You can see how much money you will save. If you have several bulbs that are very inconvenient to change, LED lights can help you with this. For any type of interior lighting, they are actually very economical to use.

You should also use a reading lamp next to the bed on the nightstand. Even for this, however, you don’t want a bulb that’s too bright. It should allow you to read, but not brighten up the room. You should never point lights directly at the bed in your bedroom. The lighting is too harsh, so this should not be done. You need to be a restful relaxed mood, which is what bedroom lighting should achieve.

Do You Need Some Flooring Ideas?

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

Do you like your floor? Do you want to change your flooring material? Are you trying to make your home more green? Is easy cleaning a priority for you? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you in your next remodel or if you are constructing your own home. To find what best suits your needs and wants out of your new flooring, take the time to research your options. Which means, of course, that you need to know what you need and what you want from your flooring. The following ideas can be used to help you decide on the ideal flooring for you.

Today more and more people are becoming environmentally conscious. You might not even realize it, but it is achievable to go "green" with your flooring. Have you been shopping for "green" flooring ideas? The two most famous "green" flooring options available are bamboo and cork. Bamboo is actually a grass and grows rampantly all over the world. Cork flooring is technically made out of the bark from cork trees. As time progresses, the bark grows back (and is re-harvested) – this actually benefits the trees to have their bark trimmed every decade or so. These are your best options if you want "green" floors.

You may also want to consider cork flooring. If you’re looking for something more environmentally friendly, cork is a good option. No trees are harvested to create cork because it is made from hard pressed tree bark. It is good to know that cork flooring will help regulate the temperature in your home. People who work long standing jobs benefit from cork because it has more give and cushion. Cork is also great if you are looking for a more decorative type flooring. It has great absorbent properties and can be stained or dyed any color that you like.

Another great flooring idea is cork. It is environmentally friendly. This option saves trees because it is made from hard pressed tree bark. Another selling point of cork flooring is it will help regulate your home’s temperature. The extra give and cushion in this type of flooring is great for those that stand all day at work. Cork also works well as a decorative flooring. It takes stains and dyes well as it is very absorbent.

One other choice for floor covering is the popular laminate floors. This type of flooring has only recently become popular in the US it was first popular in Europe. These kinds of floors can be made to look like just about any kind of floor that you want-including hardwood. This flooring is of course, longer lasting, more durable and easier to clean and install than most floor coverings. Laminate is a good idea especially if you are going to try to do your home’s remodel all by yourself. You can find flooring ideas easily with little frustration if you try. The difficulty is best left for the installation process. Some people find that having so many choices for flooring is overwhelming. You may find that the best way to get what you really want and what fits your lifestyle is to do your research first. Once you answer these questions for yourself, narrowing down your choices will be easier. From there you just have to figure out what is going to go on top of your new floors once they are installed!

Creating A Realistic Budget for Your Custom Made Home

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

You might think that building a custom home comes with a much larger price tag than buying an existing property. While there are several properties to choose from on the market today, none of these homes have been designed just for you. If you plan on building your dream home, creating a realistic budget is essential. When you take on this task, you must consider the cost of blueprints, permits, land, architect fees, and the cost of all of the upgraded materials you plan on using. Sit down and take time to build a realistic budget, and always remember that patience is a plus when you are drafting the blueprints and choosing a contractor to do the work.

You need to consider your budget, the community you want to live in, and the style of home you want to own before you can start the process. The very first thing that most home builders will do is qualify for a loan before the building process starts. Unless you have all of the money you need for the project in your account, you must find a lender offering loans on custom homes during the building process where the loan will close once the property is built. You must consider your down payment, how much you want to pay each month, and only then can you really start setting your budget and qualifying for the right loan. It is a wise idea to talk to a mortgage broker to find out which loans are best for your situation.

Once you are pre-qualified for a loan, you can finally sit down and start budgeting the cost of the project. It can take a year or more to build a custom home, from drafting the blueprints to completion. You may not be familiar with all of the costs associated with building a custom home from the ground up, and this is why you should discuss the costs with a custom builder first. Keep in mind that custom homes do not have preexisting blueprints and the costs of having these drawn can be up to $25,000. Here is a basic list of what you should expect to budget for when you are structuring the financing of your custom made home:

* Home costs (60-65% of the total project) * Land costs (25-30% of the total project) * Sitework costs (10-15% of the total project)

Story of Mid Century Modern Interiors, the Saarinen Womb Chair.

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

Eero Saarinen -since the early years of the mid-century modern era- has been one of the protagonists of the design and architecture scene. During his years at the Cranbrook Academy of Art he got involved with Charles Eames with who, later in his career, worked on many successful projects. Doubtless, one of his most known furniture -mutuated from the experience made with Charles Eames- is the Womb Chair.

Since its launch in 1948, the Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen has been always in production and definitely one of them most successful mid-century furniture ever. The shape of the Womb is the result of Saarinen’s experiments using organic shell-type seats in furniture design.

Saarinen started his experiment with Charles Eames for the ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’ competition in 1941 during which they presented the ‘Conversation, Relaxation and Lounging’ plywood seats trio. Later in the 40s Saarinen moved away from the use of plywood and started testing synthetic plastics like the glass-fibre that -indeed- he used for the final version of the Womb Chair.

The frame supported with thin rod legs kept the design light and the slim layer of padding made the seat comfortable enough. One of the biggest Saarinen’s concern designing the Womb Chair was to let people seat in many different and comfortable positions; his background and expertise as sculptor helped him to create three-dimensional forms to achieve his goal.

He emphasized that people sat in many different ways, often in positions that would have been considered impolite in the past, and developed the form of his chair to allow people to draw their legs up on the seat, to slouch and to lounge. In this way the Womb Chair was created as a modern chair for a modern way of living. But it was also a chair with an enfolding, comforting and cloak-like seat that allowed the user a little space to withdraw and shelter themselves on the modern world.

General Contractors – The Best For Home Repairs

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

If you are like the average homeowner, you likely recognize that there are a few places around the house that need improvement. Some of these are easily fixed, but others–like installing a new sunroom or remodeling a kitchen–require a bit more of a professional touch.

With a general contractor, you can essentially have a consultant guide you through each step executing your project while doling out each aspect of the job to qualified subcontractors. This can increase the overall quality of your finished room or part of the house.

Renovation and remodeling require you to turn up your imagination a fair amount. Contractors should not be left guessing what you want; you ought to be clear about your general wishes for a space, and the contractor will guide you through different alternatives.

Some contractors will only do certain types of renovation and construction, so knowing what you want will help eliminate unqualified contractors from taking a job. You cannot hire someone to tell you want to see happen in your house, so reflect on how you use a particular space and what could be done to optimize this usage. With this information, your general contractor can more speedily give you a quote. When looking for contractors in your area, use geographic search terms like Dallas based general contractors to generate a list of those closes to you.

With the many resources available to you today to choose a contractor, be sure to use just about all of them. General contractors generally will provide you with a list of relevant references. This gives you the opportunity to see the work the contractor has done recently and to interact with his former customer. In addition to this, online reviews sites can give you a broader look at the overall quality of your general contractor.

Obviously, make sure that you connect with your contractor on an intuitive level as you describe you project. Usually, general contractors assign different jobs to various subcontractors. This allows each subcontractor to exercise his expertise directly. If you are remodeling various parts of your home, the general contractor might even enlist other specialty contractors for kitchen and bath. These working relationships among contractors assure you that a good contractor will expect good work from a subcontractor.

During the scheduled renovations and repairs, be sure to check the progress daily of the new remodeling. If the contractor or subcontractors perform any work that does not meet your expectations, then be sure to contact your contractor. Some changes might involve upgrades or replacements that involve an increase in price, but it is usually worth it to spend a little extra to get exactly what you want.

A professional, punctual general contractor is worth his or her weight in gold. This person can single handedly add thousands to the value of your home. More importantly, a general contractor can complete a project that turns your present home into a dream home.

The Maison Carre, an Early Example of Mid Century Architecture

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

The Scandinavian architect and designer Alvar Aalto, worked to several private houses projects during the his career. The Maison Carre’ is one of his most celebrated works and iconic example for mid century architecture.

Louis Carre’ had very specific thoughts about the design of his new ‘maison’ close to Paris and, as consequence, also about the kind of architect he needed. He could choose between Le Corbusier and Aalto, but he found out to have a closer vision about art and architecture with Aalto. As said before, Carre’ had a very specific idea as he also said: “I wanted a roof, I don’t know why, but I absolutely wanted a roof…I had several minor requirements” like “a room surrounded by books (…) Above all I had told Aalto: I want a house where I can work (…) and built with materials that have lived”. Aalto made his dreams come true.

The main entrance hall has vaulted ceiling of Finnish red pine which brings the guests to the living area. The oblique living room forms the final point of the diagonal view that starts from the entrance, its heart is the fireplace situated in front of a panoramic window.

Another space for which Carre’ had specific requirements was the library. A room were he could work and study: a cozy, almost hidden, space. The master bedrooms and a guest house were on the ground floor, each of them with a private bathroom and sauna, while the second floor was reserved for the house-workers.

As in many of his projects, also for the maison Carre’ Aalto put high attention to the lightning – both to the artificial and natural- using panoramic windows and specially designed lamps that replace the natural light in the evenings.

What makes this house special is the fact that everything was specifically designed by Aalto with an almost maniacal attention for details: from the door handles to the swimming pool. And this is what makes the house a global work of art. The furniture are made of different kind of wood species: birch, ash, teak, pine, beech, sycamore and mahogany.

Since 1996 the Maison Carre’ is an historic monument -owned by the Alvar Aalto en France association- and open for visiting.

How Should You Design Organic Garden

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

All those who have the drive to grow plants can do it. Whether it be fruits and veggies for eating or beautiful flowers to decorate your home. Growing a garden is a simple thing if you educate yourself first. You should do research on any types of plant you want to grow so that you can be ready capable to address any problems that may come to you along the way. I’ll touch on basic principles of growing your own garden. It’ll be entirely your decision to do the study on every other particular species other than what is mentioned in this post.

Lighting

As being a gardener, the winters have been the toughest times for me personally. I’m not sure whether cabin fever or simply a need to generate things grow. In some parts of the us, it isn’t a concern, but, in Kentucky, the winters can be be extremely harsh, making it impossible to develop outdoors.

While using evolution of CFL technology ( compact fluorescent lamp ), it is now very affordable to advance my garden indoors. The CFL’s remind me of aquarium lighting and uses about just as much energy. I prefer New Wave T5 High Output Fluorescent Lights during my garden with grand results.

These new high output fluorescent lamps have an extremely high lumen per watt rating in comparison to standard fluorescent bulbs, which makes them extremely ideal for indoor cultivation purposes.

High-output fluorescent lamps employ a low heat factor allowing the fixture to be mounted extremely near to the plant canopy, thus increasing usable light levels. The newest Wave T5 features a wide throw reflector lined with Imported german 95% reflective aluminum to operate a vehicle every available lumen of light to your plants. Light output is 300% higher within this high-tech reflector compared to cheap fluorescent fixtures.

I keep my lights not far from the tops with the plants and my young sprouts are in no danger for being burned or dehydrated by the heat. And yes it gives you peace of mind knowing that there isn’t as much of the opportunity for fire like there exists with heavier, hotter, high output metal halide lamps.

When your vegetative area starts finding a little larger, or if you are growing plants bigger than 24 inches tall, you may find it time to obtain a metal halide to your indoor garden.

Metal Halide plant lamp systems develop a strong production of the blue spectrum, that can promote strong vegetative growth. This blue spectrum is most required by plants for rapid growth. It is the best kind of light to be used as a primary light (if no natural sunlight is accessible). If you are growing leafy plants including lettuce or herbs then this Metal Halide bulb is enough. Metal halide plant growth lamp systems can be used the primary light source to grow plants from start to finish.
